Frequently Asked Questions

Who are Sikhs?

Sikhs are an ethno-religious community founded over five hundred years ago by Guru Nanak, the first of the ten Sikh gurus, in the Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent. You can generally identify us by our distinctive turbans, which we were proudly, as a mark of respect to god.

We make up only a small portion of the Australian population, however, we are proud to share our values and strong focus on justice and equality with all Australian’s through our service to our community.

What does Turbans 4 Australia do?

Turbans 4 Australia specialises in providing emergency goods to people in need regardless of their race, religion or ethnicity. The people we assist include those experiencing financial hardship, food insecurity, homelessness and unemployment, as well as those impacted by natural disasters such as bushfires and floods.

Where does Turbans 4 Australia operate?

Turbans 4 Australia is based in Sydney and primarily operates in New South Wales.

However, we also provide assistance in other states and territories when we have the capacity to do so, particularly in Victoria and Queensland.

How can I get help?

If you are in urgent need of assistance, please reach out to us using the details on our Contact page.

We will get back to you as soon as possible to discuss how we can best help.

Please note we specialise in providing emergency goods such as staple pantry items and toiletries as part of our grocery hampers.

We unfortunately cannot provide fuel vouchers, assist with bill payments or provide any other form of cash assistance.

We also do not have the capacity to help with immigration or visa issues.

Can I still volunteer or access your services if I'm not Sikh?

Yes! While Turbans 4 Australia is led by members of the Sikh community, we are commited to providing assistance to all Australians in need regardless of their race, religion or ethnicity.

A core tenet of the Sikh faith is acceptance of religious diversity. We therefore do not proselytise or attempt to “convert” any of our volunteers or clients.

Our volunteers come from a diverse range of backgrounds. We don’t care where you were born, which languages you speak or what religion you practice (or if you don’t practice at all). As long as your willing to lend a helping hand, you’re welcome to join our team.
